Earlier this year, Huntsman Cancer Institute’s community champions, Rosie and Halle Peralta, hosted the My Health First Workshop for the Bee Strong Cancer Foundation (BSCF). At this fun and entertaining event held at Roots Charter High School in West Valley City, attendees enjoyed wellness activities, educational presentations, and free mammogram services for eligible members.
A Day of Community, Education, and Wellness
From 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, families from all over Salt Lake County came together for a fun workshop day filled with free activities and prizes. The event started off with a free, nutritious breakfast, then workshops, free mammograms, and a chat with Dr. Jandrely about cancer prevention.
Workshop activities included:
A meditative yoga class.
A hands-on self-defense course
A healthy cooking demo.
An educational presentation on cancer prevention.
Health resource hour.
These interactive and community-driven events built strong connections and helped spread awareness of cancer prevention and screening resources.
Expanding Access to Lifesaving Screening
A huge benefit from the My Health First Workshop was free mammograms for women aged 40-64 who were uninsured, had no breast concerns or family history, and had not gotten a mammography in the past year. This service helped bridge the gap caused by cost and access barriers in these communities.
Mammograms allow for early breast cancer detection, which can be life saving. Throughout the day, attendees were informed of how to schedule a mammogram appointment and learned more about what cancer prevention is all about.
Community Partnerships in Action
The My Health First Workshop demonstrated how collaboration can transform community health. Bee Strong Cancer Foundation, Huntsman Cancer Institute, Roots Charter High School, and local healthcare providers, including mobile screening teams, came together to offer vital cancer education and screening services. By combining expertise and community trust, we created a welcoming space where families could learn, ask questions, and access services they may not have pursued otherwise. This teamwork helped reduce barriers to care and build lasting connections to ongoing support.
Why This Event Matters
For many attendees, this event was their first chance to understand cancer prevention, screening options, and healthy living in a culturally welcoming environment. Free mammograms and health resources helped break down financial, language, and transportation obstacles, common barriers for underserved communities. The workshop empowered individuals to take control of their health and encouraged confidence in seeking regular screening and preventive care.
Looking Ahead
The success of this workshop is just the beginning. Bee Strong Cancer Foundation will continue partnering with schools, healthcare providers, and community organizations to bring more workshops, mobile screenings, and educational programs to communities across Utah and beyond. Our vision is to expand this model nationwide, making life-saving education and screenings not just available, but truly accessible to all.
With the support of volunteers, partners, and families, we’re building healthier, stronger, and more informed communities, one workshop at a time.
